Botox & Dysport Overview

What Is Botox?

Botox in Orlando at Oppenheimer Plastic Surgery is the least invasive injection and should be viewed very differently than fillers, even though they are sometimes referenced together. While fillers leave a product under your skin that lasts for a year (like in lip fillers), Botox is gone in hours. All of the work done to weaken the muscles is done within the few hours that Botox is actually in your system. Yet, even though the Botox is rapidly gone, the results last for months because the muscles are temporarily weakened. No permanent changes occur to the body with Botox.

How Is Botox Different From Fillers?

Botox is a purified preparation of botulinum toxin A that blocks the transmission of nerve impulses to muscles and relaxes them. Fillers, on the other hand, are made of various types of hyaluronan (hyaluronic acid or HA) to add volume and smooth out lines/wrinkles. The first is a muscle relaxer; the other is a soft tissue volumizer.

Botox relaxes the muscles around the eyes and in the brow, leading to fewer wrinkles in the upper part of the face. Botox is really a no-brainer for your “youth regimen.” It will leave you looking more rejuvenated and well-rested.

What Is Dysport?

Dysport is a neuromodulator similar to Botox, yet it operates with its own unique formulation of botulinum toxin type A. This injectable treatment is specifically designed to target and temporarily relax facial muscles responsible for dynamic wrinkles, such as frown lines and crow's feet. Dysport works by inhibiting nerve signals to the treated muscles, preventing them from contracting. The onset of results is relatively swift, typically within a few days. Though Dysport is metabolized quickly, its muscle-relaxing effects can persist for several months and, like Botox, provide a non-permanent solution to wrinkles.

How Is Dysport Different From Botox?

The choice between Dysport and Botox in Orlando depends on individual factors, including the desired results, the area being treated, and the patient’s response to each product. While both are neurotoxin injectables used for cosmetic purposes, there are some differences between the two. I’ll help you decide which product is best to achieve your goals.

Formulation

Dysport and Botox contain the same active ingredient, botulinum toxin type A, but they have different formulations and protein structures. Dysport has smaller molecules, which may lead to faster onset and a broader spread of effects.

Onset of Action

Dysport is reported to have a quicker onset of action than Botox. Some individuals may notice results from Dysport within 3-4 days, while Botox typically takes about 5-7 days for noticeable effects. However, both forms will take 14 days for the full treatment effect.

Spread and Diffusion

Due to its smaller molecules, Dysport may diffuse more widely from the injection site. This can be advantageous in treating larger areas but may require careful administration to avoid unintended effects.

Dosage

The units of measurement for Dysport and Botox are not equivalent. A unit of Dysport is considered to have a different potency than a unit of Botox, and the dosages required can vary. Fifty units of Botox is equivalent to 150 units of Dysport.

Durability

While individual responses can vary, some people find Dysport's effects may last slightly shorter or longer than Botox. It's important to note that both provide temporary results, and subsequent injections are needed to maintain the effects. For both products, maintenance is recommended every 3-4 months and the more consistent you are with your treatments, the more long-lasting your results will be.

What Can I Expect During a Wrinkle-Relaxing Treatment in Orlando?

Botox and Dysport are simple, straightforward treatments that involve injections into the eyebrow and forehead areas. The procedure lasts only a few minutes and involves anywhere from five to 10 small needle pokes. As your Orlando nurse practitioner, I use the smallest needles possible, so it’s as easy and low-pain as possible. It’s important to me that you feel comfortable during your visit.

It’s rare to have any bruising from Botox or Dysport injections; if it does occur, it will be minimal and can easily be covered with concealer.

Am I a Candidate for Botox or Dysport?

You are a good candidate for Botox and Dysport in Orlando at Oppenheimer Plastic Surgery if you have lines around your eyes and across your brow. Frown lines in the lower face and around the mouth can also be treated with Botox, as can a gummy smile. If you feel that too much of your teeth and gums show when you smile, a small amount of Botox can relax the smiling muscles and make your smile more subtle. If you see the beginnings of fine lines and wrinkles, then you can consider early and preventative Botox or Dysport as early as in your twenties.

What Is Recovery Like After Botox & Dysport?

On the day of your injections, there can be small welts at the injection sites for 30 minutes or so. Results start to be visible in just a few days, with wrinkles starting to fade immediately. Two weeks is when the full effect of Botox or Dysport kicks in, and it should last for 3-4 months. Recovery is a few hours, and bruising is rare. Even if you have a tendency to bruise, it may take only a couple of days to have no evidence of injections. Overall, there is little to no recovery and no downtime after Botox or Dysport in Orlando. Most patients return to their daily activities immediately after their treatments, maybe waiting to use the gym for about a day. If touch-ups are needed, they can be easily done within a few weeks.
