What Are Lip Injections?

Lip injections are a procedure where hyaluronic acid—a naturally occurring substance in our bodies—is injected into the lips to address a variety of different goals. The main one is to give them a plump and more youthful, hydrated appearance. As we age, we lose the volume and definition of our lips, so the main aim of getting lip filler is to restore that volume and the shape that is desired.

A Tailored Approach to Lip Augmentation

​Some women love super plump, full lips, and some don’t really want anyone to know they’ve done anything. There is a lip filler approach for everyone! Everyone’s desired outcome can be achieved depending on the product and technique. That’s why I always start each consult with a discussion of your goals. You don’t have to come in and expect to leave with super full lips if that’s not what you’re looking for. For example, if you’re just looking to address wrinkles in the lips and not necessarily to increase their size, then some more subtle fillers and techniques can be used.

Do You Want Augmented or Natural-Looking Lips?

Confidence is a choice, and for your lips, the choice is yours. One vial for natural, two vials for augmented. It's completely your call. Generally, we start with one vial of lip filler and revisit the results in 4-6 weeks. If you want more voluptuous lips at that point, then we can add more!

Personally, I’m very big on enhancing the shape of the lip and keeping it well-defined and youthful. Some women want super full lips; some want a subtle enhancement. Some people bring “wish pics,” and we talk about what is realistic to achieve with your own natural lip shape.

The projection of your cheeks and chin should be in proportion with your lips to achieve balance from all angles, not only straight on but also from your profile view. ​

A Patient-Centered Approach to Injections

Initially, in our consult, we talk about exactly what you’re looking to achieve and discuss the best way to get there. Then we put on a very strong topical numbing cream, and you’ll sit for a few minutes while that takes effect. Next, we begin with injections. I don’t rush. I’m very gentle and go slow to make it as comfortable as possible. 

We’ll do check-ins with a mirror during the procedure so you can see your progress. The lip filler product also contains local anesthesia, so as we go, it continues to become more and more numb. Once we’re finished and have achieved your desired result, we apply some gloss and take after photos. I take my time and constantly reassess your lips and the progress during the treatment.

How do I know if I'm a candidate for lip fillers?

In my aesthetic world, almost everyone is a candidate for lip fillers! The only criteria that would exclude you would be a history of an allergic reaction to filler (super rare) or if you’ve previously had silicone or an implant placed in your lips. If you have a history of cold sores, we will pretreat you prior to getting filler, but it does not exclude you from treatment.

Is there downtime? What's the recovery like?

Downtime varies from patient to patient. You should expect swelling of the lips for the first 48-72 hours. Bruising, lumps, bumps, swelling, and asymmetry for the first week, occasionally lasting up to two weeks in some people. Once you’re past that time, the subtle differences are not super noticeable to others. You can apply makeup within 24 hours of your treatment. It will take a full two weeks to see your settled and final outcome. In actuality, a lot of women end up liking their swollen lip appearance, so they may come back for more!

How long does it last?

Typically lip fillers last anywhere from 6-12 months. Everybody metabolizes their filler differently. However, I find that if you’ve been injected multiple times, you tend to retain your filler much longer and can easily go a year or more between treatments. Sometimes, this also means you need less product to achieve the same look as you did previously. This is not true for everyone, but it applies to many of my patients.

Do lip fillers hurt?

As Dr. Oppenheimer says, “Gentleness in all things.” It’s become my mantra as well. As I mentioned above, I use a topical numbing cream to numb your lips before treatment. I have a very gentle hand, and I move slowly, which allows the numbing within the syringe to take effect faster. People tend to do very well and come back for more filler on a regular basis.
