What Is Scar Revision?

Scars can result from injury, surgery, or other skin conditions; they can be aesthetically unpleasant and make some people self-conscious. In some cases, they can also create physical pain, such as severe itching and discomfort. The goal of scar revision is to minimize the scar's visibility and improve its texture.

There are a number of factors that affect scarring, including blood supply, skin tone, thickness of your skin, and depth, location, or size of the original wound. Your age, ethnicity, and genetics are all considerations for a scar treatment. You will need to wait at least three months after surgery before getting a scar treatment. Our goal at Oppenheimer Plastic Surgery is to minimize your scar, make it as inconspicuous as possible, and have it blend in with your surrounding skin tone.

A Consultation Will Help Us Determine Your Treatment Plan

A consultation is crucial before any scar revision treatment in Orlando at Oppenheimer Plastic Surgery. You are unique; your scars are unique; we must consider your scar's characteristics and skin type. Together, we will determine whether you will need more than one treatment to reduce your scar.

If you are a smoker, it is important that you quit at least two weeks before a treatment. You will need to stop taking aspirin and medications that are known to delay healing, as well as skin care products that contain glycolic or retinoic acid. We will go over all the details during your consultation.

Together, we can come up with a treatment that will work best for you and align it with your expectations. The goal is to help you no longer feel self-conscious and to improve and resolve an issue that has likely been bothering you for a long time.

Types of Scars

Acne Scars

These types of scars can fluctuate from deep pores to angular punctures in the skin. The right procedure depends on your type of acne scars. Laser resurfacing, microneedling, and sometimes even injectable fillers may be considered, as well as chemical peels.

Hypertrophic Scars

Like keloid scars, they are also thick and red, but the difference is that hypertrophic scars tend to stay within the wound or incision area. Sometimes, we must remove the excess scar tissue with a scar revision.

Keloid Scars

These types of scars are red or dark in color, in a thick cluster, and growing beyond the edges of the incisions, often over the breastbone or on the earlobes or shoulders. The problem is the body is still producing collagen after a wound has healed.

Scar Revision Treatments Offered in Orlando

Laser Resurfacing

We offer multiple types of laser resurfacing, and the one chosen will depend on the characteristics of your scar. The laser uses heat to promote new collagen production, which remodels the scar and results in an “airbrushed” or “blended” effect.

Depending on the type of laser we use, this may also address redness, discoloration, and the thickness of the scar. Multiple treatments may be needed, and we will determine this at your consultation.

Microneedling

With this technique, we make thousands of microchannels of controlled trauma using a pen to reduce the thickness of the scar and allow for new collagen growth.

Chemical Peels

Chemical peels may be used to exfoliate varying layers of your skin. This will reduce the appearance of some types of scarring and associated pigmentation.

IPL Photofacial

IPL, or Intense Pulse Light, treatment may be used to address pigmentation, redness, or broken capillaries within the scar. This may be used with or without other modalities.

Silkki: Silicone Scar Therapy

Silkki is our medical-grade silicone scar gel, to improve the appearance of all scars in all skin tones at all time points. This product is suitable for even the most sensitive skin and forms a permeable silicone sheet after drying. Silkki hydrates, softens, and protects your scar and aids in scar maturation. Scar Revision FAQ

Am I a candidate for scar treatment?

What are the risks?

Am I a candidate for scar treatment?

If you are bothered by a scar, are in good physical health, are a non-smoker, and do not have active acne or other skin diseases, you are a good candidate for scar revision.

What are the risks?

Scar treatment is a safe procedure that can include minor risks such as a reaction to anesthesia, bleeding, change in skin sensation, delayed healing, infection, recurrence of an unsightly scar or skin discoloration, and contour irregularities. I pride myself on safety and take every precaution possible to get you the results you deserve.

The Recovery Process

We care! We’ll be here for you not only during your procedure but also throughout your entire recovery. Your aftercare will vary depending on what kind of scar treatment is performed.

If your scar revision is surgical, we use silicone strips and provide you with our custom-formulated silicone scar gel, Silkki, to massage the healing incision. We are here on the other end of a 24/7 call line (not a call center, just us) if you need any information or assistance. Here are a few things that will help you during your recovery:

  • You will likely feel some pain after your procedure, and medication can be prescribed for your discomfort.
  • Keep your wound clean.
  • Keep your silicone bandages on until told otherwise.
  • Do not scratch your incisions.
  • Use our silicone scar gels for massage as directed.
  • Scar massage is critical and will soften and flatten your scar as you heal.
  • A silicone gel adhesive is often applied after surgery.
  • Make sure to use sunscreen to prevent hyperpigmentation.
